The companies doubling down on Copilot aren't wrong—there's real value in typing assistance. But they're optimizing for a local maximum while missing the actual opportunity. The next generation of development tools won't make coding faster. They'll make coding unnecessary for an increasingly large category of problems.

What Comes Next

The future isn't better autocomplete—it's AI that operates at a higher level of abstraction. Tools that take requirements and produce working systems. Assistants that debug by understanding system behavior, not just syntax. Agents that can refactor codebases by comprehending architectural patterns.
