The problem isn't data quality—it's that everyone's looking at identical datasets and reaching suspiciously similar conclusions. When every SaaS company cites "the $X billion cloud market growing at Y% CAGR," you're not doing market analysis. You're doing market karaoke.

What Actually Matters in Market Analysis

Real market analysis isn't about finding the right report or calculating addressable market with more decimal places. It's about identifying the gaps between what data says is happening and what's actually happening in customer conversations.

They cared about solving the deployment and context management problems that every report somehow missed.

What Bottom-Up Analysis Actually Looks Like

Proper market analysis starts with customer conversations and works backward to market sizing, not the other way around. It's "what specific problem are we solving, and how do we know it's painful enough that people will pay to fix it?"

Everything else is supporting evidence. Market sizing validates that enough people have the problem to build a business. Competitive analysis identifies where others have failed to solve it adequately. Trend analysis suggests whether the problem is getting more or less acute.

But the core insight comes from understanding customer behavior at a level of specificity that doesn't fit neatly into analyst reports. When a customer says "we need better collaboration tools," that's useless. When they describe the specific workflow where three people waste two hours every week reconciling data across systems, that's actionable.

The Contrarian Indicator

The most valuable market analysis often contradicts published research. When every report says the market is moving in one direction, the opportunity is usually in the opposite direction or in serving the segment that doesn't fit the dominant narrative.

Enterprise software reports spent years declaring that cloud adoption was inevitable and on-premise was dead. The companies that built better on-premise tools for regulated industries made fortunes serving the customers everyone else abandoned. The market analysis was directionally correct but missed the fact that "inevitable" doesn't mean "immediate" and that transition periods create massive opportunities.

Market analysis became a commodity the moment everyone got access to the same data sources. The competitive advantage shifted to interpretation, synthesis, and the willingness to believe customer evidence over analyst consensus. The reports still matter, but only as a baseline to argue against.
