This is where the junior developer metaphor completely falls apart. A junior developer on your team for six months has absorbed context about why certain patterns exist, which systems are fragile, what the performance constraints are, and where the technical debt lives. AI starts from zero every time. You can paste in documentation, but documentation is always incomplete—the really important context is tacit knowledge that never gets written down.

The teams handling this well aren't trying to feed AI all the context. They're redesigning their systems to minimize context requirements. Smaller, more isolated components with clear contracts. Better abstraction boundaries. The kind of architecture we should have been building anyway, but AI made the cost of bad architecture visible in a new way.

Documentation Became an Asset When It Became Input

The shift in documentation economics is genuinely interesting. For years, documentation was a cost center—effort spent writing things that would be outdated by next sprint. Now documentation is input to code generation, which changes the ROI calculation completely. Good documentation generates correct code. Bad documentation generates code that looks right but does the wrong thing.

The companies that will win here are the ones that figure out documentation that serves both purposes. Specifications precise enough for code generation but readable enough for human comprehension. That's harder than it sounds—legal contracts are precise but unreadable, while most technical documentation is readable but imprecise.

The Control Paradox

Spec-Driven Development promises to "bring back control, clarity, and responsibility," but there's a paradox here. You gain control over what gets built by writing better specifications, but you lose visibility into how it gets built. The implementation details disappear into AI-generated code that you didn't write and may not fully understand.

This matters more than people realize. Understanding implementation details is how developers build intuition about performance characteristics, edge cases, and failure modes. When AI generates the implementation, you get code that works but may not understand why it works or how it fails. The debugging experience becomes archaeological—trying to understand code that nobody on your team actually wrote.

The counter-argument is that we already don't understand most of the code we depend on. Every npm package, every framework, every library is implementation we didn't write. AI-generated code is just making explicit what was always true: most software is built on abstractions we don't fully comprehend. The difference is that with libraries, someone understood the implementation. With AI-generated code, maybe nobody does.

What Actually Changed

The real insight from this conversation isn't about AI capabilities—it's about what AI revealed about software development. Writing code was never the hard part. The hard parts are understanding requirements, maintaining context, making architectural decisions, and coordinating across a team. AI made this obvious by automating the easy part and exposing everything else.

The teams adapting successfully aren't the ones with the best AI tools. They're the ones who already had good specification practices, clear architectural boundaries, and strong documentation culture. AI amplified existing organizational capabilities rather than compensating for their absence. If your team struggled with clarity before AI, AI just lets you be unclear at greater scale.

We're heading toward a world where code generation is commoditized and specification becomes the differentiator. The valuable skill isn't writing code—it's knowing what code to write. That was always true, but AI made it impossible to ignore.
